instagram is late to the ‘rage shake’ party

Another day, another Snapchat feature lands up on Instagram. The Meta-owned app has now implemented a ‘rage shake’ feature that lets you shake your phone to report a bug.

Last night, Instagram‘s chief, Adam Mosseri, announced this feature alongside another one that will let you delete a specific photo from a carousel. Pretty neat.

You can watch the feature in action in the video below from the 55-second mark. You can also turn the toggle off so you don’t accidentally land on the bug reporting page.

While Snapchat has had this feature for more than a year, I can’t credit it as the first one to implement it. We’ve seen this feature being used by Google Maps since 2012. Heck, even Facebook had it for a while in 2019.

There are plenty of other apps such as Atlassian Confluence and WARP by Cloudflare that allow you to shake your device to report problems. There is a company called Shake Bugs, which has developed an SDK — used by companies like Hermes, Bird, and WeWork — so you can easily embed a shake to report feature in your app.

Plus, there are more libraries available for both iOS and Android to include this feature with a few lines of code in your app.

Instagram is late to the game, but it’s better than never. The app’s shake to report feature will be rolling out to users in the US first. But the firm has given no date for the global rollout. Bummer
