Robot penguins: This underwater drone can cruise at 11.5 mph

German underwater robotics company EvoLogics has developed an advanced version of its Quadroin autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV).

When the Quadroin vehicle was first unveiled in May 2021, it attracted notice for its unusual, penguin-like look.

The quick and agile Quadroin, designed for surveying and monitoring, uses EvoLogics’ low-drag bionic design experience.

The advanced hydrodynamic qualities of the AUV are the result of years of research on penguin locomotion by the team. The Quadroin’s low drag form allows it to reach speeds of up to 10 knots, which reduces energy consumption and allows for a variety of deployments.

Innovation beneath the waves

The EvoLogics Quadroin is an AUV distinguished by its sleek, low-drag bionic design inspired by years of meticulous research. The Quadroin measures 1,120 mm (44 in) in length and weighs less than 55 pounds (25 kilograms).

Taking cues from the spindle-shaped contour of a penguin, this AUV maximizes hydrodynamic efficiency, rendering it both swift and agile, capable of speeds up to 5 m/s. Propelled by four horizontal thrusters arranged in an X-shaped configuration, it navigates through underwater environments with precision.

Enhancing its functionality, the Quadroin features an automatically collapsible multifunctional antenna, extending its endurance and communication range upon surfacing.

Engineered for monitoring and surveying, the fast and maneuverable Quadroin leverages EvoLogics’ expertise in low-drag bionic design.

Equipped with a surface communication module boasting WiFi, 868 MHz radio, and GNSS capabilities, it ensures seamless interaction with operators above water. The built-in S2C M 18/34 “mini” modem facilitates underwater communication and positioning, integrating seamlessly with a streamlined antenna cover.

With ample payload capacity, the Quadroin accommodates a diverse array of sensors and instruments, catering to a wide range of mission objectives. Additionally, high-power flashlights are incorporated, facilitating easy localization and recovery in various underwater conditions.

Improved functionalities with new generation

The first wave of Quadroin prototypes, emphasizing tracking ocean eddies, was created with Hereon for the Helmholtz Association’s MOSES program.

These vehicles are fitted with sensors that allow the collection of geo-referenced data at varying depths on a range of physical water characteristics, such as conductivity, oxygen, temperature, pressure, and fluorescence.

According to Evologics, the latest generation of Quadroin is now carrying an increased instrument payload. Acoustic seabed imaging is made possible by side-scan sonar.

In addition, two full-HD underwater cameras with dimmable LED lights—one pointing beneath and the other forward at a 45-degree angle—allow the user to identify the area around the vehicle visually.

The new generation focuses on expanding its instrument payload capacity and underwater AI computations.

The recently incorporated EvoLogics AI-driven object recognition module enables real-time detection of objects within side-scan sonar and video feeds during missions, with processing executed onboard the vehicle. Additionally, it facilitates automatic collision avoidance via a forward-facing sonar system.

According to the firm, for maximum performance, the propulsion and hardware systems were completely overhauled using next-generation parts. The Nortek Nucleus1000 complete subsea navigation package, which combines Nortek’s DVL technology with extra position-aiding sensors for dependable vehicle management, is now available for the Quadroin.

Pricing for commercial clients can be obtained upon request. According to New Atlas, the new Quadroin is expected to go into production in the fourth quarter of this year.
