Working remotely as thousands of businesses across the country are closing down or shortening hours has boomed in popularity, but even before COVID-19 hit the world, remote work was already starting to become widespread. Before the outbreak, only a small percentage of slightly more than 5% of workers were working from home full time, and 29% of workers had the option to work at home part time. In the face of COVID-19 however, it is estimated that up to 50% of the workforce could be working from home, and by 2025, experts have estimated that 70% of the workforce could be working remotely at least 5 days each month.

A number of advancements in economics, technology, and ease of use have all pushed toward more people choosing remote work over traditional work. The Great Recession in 2008 forced many businesses across the country to downsize on office space and to encourage employees to start to work from home. Technology moving forward and creating messaging apps like Slack, video conferencing platforms like Zoom, and project management apps like Asana have made working away from an office and working at home easier than ever. Convenience created by remote work is made eliminating commute time, letting employees work from areas that lower the cost of living, and growing the success of remote businesses.

Remote work also benefits both the employees and businesses that employ them in many significant ways. Those who work remotely love it – 99% of those who work from home would like to remain working remotely, at least part time, for the rest of their lives. Remote work can benefit employees as it removes distractions such as office drama, it can improve concentration, and can reduce stress. It also allows an employee to have more wiggle room as when they are working remotely, they can live anywhere they want, spend more time with family, and avoid wasting any time commuting. Remote work also saves employees money – the average remote worker saves $4,000 annually from saving money in dry cleaning, lunches and coffee, gas, and vehicle maintenance.

Companies also benefit from their workers working remotely. Employee satisfaction is higher with remote workers – remote workers are 28% happier than on-site workers. The attrition rate for those who work remotely is also lower as 55% of remote workers would be likely to look for another job if they could no longer work remotely.

Enter 5G networks and big data, our newest additions and one can’t help but ask “how are we going to protect this?” We already know some potential weak points such as overly connected IoT devices and reliance on software updates to maintain security. We already have some promising leads with techniques such as integrated security, let’s take a step ahead of the curveball, shall we?
